He was the son of William Sloan and Annie Crawford (nee Robertson Prentice, of Toronto, Ontario. He had attended Scarborough Collegiate from 1936 - 1941.
He died when Lysander aircraft #1540 crashed near Shedden, Ontario during a training exercise. They had been towing drogues for an air to air firing exercise. When it was finished the aircraft broke away and 15 minutes later was seen to take a sharp dive and crash.
Corporal Kenneth Elgin Nicholson was killed in the same crash.
Robert is commemorated on page 204 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance. There is a Tribute to him on the Roll Call of Honour website.
